On some recent intercontinental flights, I was able to sample many of the recent theater releases which you were probably smart enough to avoid in the theater, but might be tempted to actually rent in either misguided interest or desperation. Let me enlighten you.

The Family Stone: Rachel McAdams wasn't enough to save this movie. Sarah Jessica Parker really is annoying. It was more quirky than heartwarming or romantic. And Rupert Everett was just not dreamy.

Rumor Has It: Jennifer Aniston plays her usual character, but indecisive and angst-ridden, as opposed to ditzy and flighty. Mark Ruffalo? I'm not sure what he was doing.

Nanny McPhee: Okay, I know this one doesn't really sound that appealing, but it had Colin Firth, which is one of my DVD Achilles heels. Anyhow, it was a terrible moppet movie, with lots of annoying children. At least the romantic interest was cute and sweet.

Overall: Run away. Quickly. Even if you are on a 10 hour flight, perhaps you should consider counting the pattern in the carpet.
