Tivo HD is out

The Tivo "Series 3 lite" is finally out, and it is being called Tivo HD. It's available now for $300, which is a far cry from the $800 price tag on the Series 3. Engadget has a round-up with reviews of the device, but the general consensus is that this is the one people have been waiting for.

In case you don't want to read all the details, this thing has HDMI and component out up to 1080i (which is the max that the TV standard goes anyway), dual CableCARD tuners, and built-in ATSC/NTSC /clear QAM tuners. It's missing THX certification and TivoToGo, which are probably not major deal-breakers for people when you can save $500.

The Series 3 also can't do TivoToGo, so as far as functionality is concernced you really don't lose anything. The only real difference seems to be the smaller hard drive. I think I'm going to order one. Now if only I can convince Tivo to transfer my lifetime service.
