NYC is putting decals on the street so you know your orientation when you get out of the subway. They're just piloting this program, but I think it's pretty useful because the blocks are long so going to wrong direction can waste a lot of time, and the twistiness of the stations and stairwells can really confuse you as to what direction you're going.
